Psalms 46 begins with, in my opinion, one of the most comforting truths in scripture. That our God is a safe place for us to flee to, finding refuge; a protection/strength; and an exceedingly near aid in time of distress.
"God is [our] protection/defence/refuge, an exceedingly present help in trouble." [Psa 46:1]
These three aspects of our Lord’s character, shown most perfectly through Jesus Christ, God’s Son, who is “the exact representation of [The Father’s] substance,” allow us the freedom to live lives free from fear. The Psalmist goes on,
"Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah." [Psa 46:2-3]
God’s character is so excellent and He is such a benevolent aid, that is, He, who is “able also to save them completely that come unto [Him] by [Jesus]” [Heb 7:25], that even if the world literally began to fall apart, to “be removed,” the mountains being “carried into the midst of the sea,” yes even in that sorry state of affairs The Lord offers us peace “which is surpassing all understanding” and freedom from fears.
This lack of fear must be acquired through Jesus Christ, through prayer, through a steadfast beholding of Jesus’ character and glory. We must, as David thoroughly tried, not let our hearts fear, but rather “be confident” in this fact:
"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" [Psa 27:1]
Our precious and wonderful God has promised us, saying,
"'I will never fail to uphold thee, nor leave thee in a situation without aid.' So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." [Heb 13:5b-6]
And, we must, as David says again,
"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore." [Psa 121]
We, through Jesus Christ, have access to these promises and these great hopes. God, who is able to “save [us] completely” is our “protection;” our “light” and “salvation;” He is “the strength of [our] life.” He has promised never to fail upholding us, never to let us alone without aid; in direct contrast, He promises to be “exceedingly present” in time of trouble no matter the degree.
If God’s protection is able, through the indwelling and working of The Holy Spirit, to produce in us a calm, though the world around us literally disintegrates, which, for many unfortunate saints will be the case, for we are promised at a future time “The LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down,” and, “the earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage,” and again in Nahum,
"The mountains quake at [The LORD], and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at His presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein." [Nah 1:5]
Yes, if those saints who must endure The Day of The LORD can be without fear, then surely we, who exist in a comparatively easy time, can also be without fear.
CONCLUSION
Let us not be fearful, for the “fearful…hall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” [Rev 21:8] Instead, we should “sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.” [Isa 8:13] Let us not quickly forget who our Father is: the maker of heaven and earth, the sustainer of all life, the God of all flesh, the Great I Am. He will not leave us nor forsake us, so let us take courage and press on; let us remain standing and fighting till the very end, for He is worthy of whom we fight for, and His glorious reward is with Him.
"In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?" [Psa 11:1]
